We would suggest, however, that you check to see if you have a local Docomomo (Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement) group. If you do they can be a wonderful resource. If you don’t, look for the nearest area that has one or contact them at:

We believe two of the key factors are the, “…expressive use of modern materials and the incorporation of landscaped areas sometimes inside the house…“. Post-and-beam construction, at least in part, and the broad low-pitched gable roof are also important characteristics.

Besides the obvious, i.e. time period, there are some characteristic differences. In Contemporary Modern homes one sees more use of metal roofs, synthetic sidings, and metal structural support. These materials along with improvements in more traditional materials have allowed architects to continue the move outside of the box of convention. It is our belief that the feel, the aesthetic, the sense of Modern remains but that innovation and technology have created some differences. With that said, we have seen some pretty amazing updates of Classic Modern homes that would give any Contemporary Modern home a run for its money.
