Located across Lake Washington to the east of Seattle you will find a collection of cities commonly known as "The Eastside". It is a large area spanning from Renton in the south end to Bothell and Woodinville in the north and from the eastern shore of Lake Washington out to North Bend and Carnation at the base of the Cascades.
The area began its expansion in the 1950's with the building of the Evergreen floating bridge and many neighborhoods reflect that mid-century time period. West Bellevue in particular is a treasure trove of custom, mid-century homes designed by the fathers of Northwest Modern architecture-Paul Hayden Kirk, Roland Terry and Omer Mithun, to name a few. Other Modern Bellevue neighborhoods include Woodridge, Surrey Downs, Robinswood, Eastgate, and the iconic Hilltop neighborhood.
Kirkland, to the north of Bellevue along the lakeshore, is home to a bustling downtown area full of retail shops and art galleries. Kirkland is also home to many beautiful examples of Contemporary Modern architecture as old cottages have been torn down and new homes built to take advantage of the lake views. Additionally, the neighborhoods of Bridle Trails, Holmes Point and Rose Hill are home to many Mid-Century Modern homes.
As you move through the cities of Kirkland and Bellevue to the greater Eastside, you have to look harder for Modern. This area was largely built out in the 70's, 80's and 90's so Post-Modern Traditional is more prevalent. Fortunately, there are both Mid-Century and new Contemporary Moderns scattered throughout Redmond, Woodinville, Sammamish, Issaquah and Bothell - you just need to know where to look.

Bellevue lies east of Seattle, across Lake Washington. No longer just a bedroom community of Seattle, Bellevue is a growing, sophisticated city. So big, in fact, that this week I want to focus on a portion of that area: Bellevue's west side—essentially comprising Medina, Clyde Hill, West Bellevue, and Enatai (including …
